Job Search Checklist

Work through this in order — most teachers skip steps and then wonder why replies are slow.

Get ready

  • Decide your top three countries and why
  • Set a realistic earliest start date
  • List your target age group and school type
  • Update your CV for ESL roles
  • Check your passport is valid for at least 18 more months
  • Start your background check and degree apostille early

Apply smart

  • Tailor each application to the school
  • Track every application in a simple list
  • Apply to a mix of safe and stretch roles
  • Follow up once after 5–7 days

Compare offers

  • Compare total packages, not just salary
  • Ask to speak with a current foreign teacher
  • Get the full contract in writing before you accept
  • Note visa timelines for each country

Stay organized

  • Keep your documents in one folder
  • Keep recruiters and schools in separate threads
  • Save copies of every offer and contract

Red flags

  • No written contract, or details that keep changing
  • Vague answers about housing, hours or pay dates
  • Requests for you to pay a fee to get the job
  • No way to contact current or past teachers
